SCUP 2024 Annual Conference Session on HBCUs and the Fourth Wave

Join our team at the Society for College and University Planning, commonly known as SCUP, 2024 Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Senior Associate and Senior Educational Planner Troy Glover will present alongside Principal and Planning and Urban Design Leader Yogesh Saoji, AIA, AICP, in a session titled “HBCUs and the Fourth Wave: Opportunities and Lessons Learned.” In the session, they will tell critical stories of how Historically Black Colleges and Universities, commonly referred to as HBCUs, have leveraged physical, academic, financial, and operational strategies to enhance and strengthen their missions, from their early years, through the pandemic, and today. HBCUs have become pillars of the African American Community, fostering academic excellence and a sense of cultural identity through times of racial segregation and limited opportunity.

Learning outcomes include:

  1. Recognizing the significance of HBCUs, the critical role they play in higher education, and their resilience in dealing with opportunities and challenges.
  2. Recounting lessons learned from two HBCUs about how they’ve navigated student enrollment, integrated planning, and operational and financial strategies.
  3. Applying successful approaches and techniques from HBCUs strategic partnerships that maximize their use of real estate opportunities.
  4. How to incorporate and align an institution’s academic mission with facility and strategic planning.

Troy and Yogesh will be joined by Gregory Vincent, President of Talladega College and Dr. Logan Hampton, President of Lane College, who will discuss their institutions’ significant and dynamic journeys over the years, and how they have evolved through different historical contexts and social changes.

The session will be held on the second day of the conference, Monday, July 22, from 8:30 to 9:30 AM.

Be sure to attend our other sessions to learn about space utilization strategies and increasing community college enrollment and retention.
